Hey Prospects…How Do I Look?

August 14, 2010

Have you seen the show “How Do I Look” on the Style Network?  It’s a makeover program and I’ve only seen two episodes, but the funniest part of the show is, the person getting the makeover are women with huge chips on their shoulders.  They claim to not care what people think and that they shouldn’t be judged by how they look, but rather by who they are as a person.  They just don’t see that their image is sending out all the wrong messages.

People should like you for who you are, but the reality is, first impressions speak volumes – true or not, and if someone doesn’t know you, that’s all they have to base it on. Ultimately, it’s not about style, but about exuding confidence when you feel good about yourself and that in turn creates the confidence that others have in you.

This is the case with your personal, physical image and your business image – outgoing voicemail, your web presence, your business card and other business communications.  They all tell a story about you and your company.

Have you considered what image you are presenting to your prospects and existing clients? Are there incongruencies in your marketing image and message?   Is it clear to your home staging prospects what it is that you do?  Remember, there are a lot of folks looking for and doing research about companies and services online.

What does your online presence tell about you? Have you tried googling yourself to see what comes up?  Would someone be impressed by what they find? and Does it position you as a home staging expert in your local area?

I was recently asked if I knew of an expert in a specific niche area. I provided two names. Both parties are very good at what they do and are equally qualified.  Unfortunately, that’s where the similarity ends.  I knew that if the asking party googled each of their names, looked up their websites and looked for them on social media, it would be evident very quickly which one is the “perceived” expert.  I almost felt like I was sabotaging one by associating her with the other because of this very reason.

You may have never thought about this and if not, it’s time to think about it.

If, on the other hand, you know that this is something you need to address, I encourage you to take care of this sooner rather than later.

There are media outlets and organizations looking for home staging experts all day long. They are going to choose the person that appears to be the most qualified, most established, the “perceived” expert based on what they find.  Make sure everything they find screams that you are the obvious choice.  I was just recently offered a recurring column in a magazine that services a very specific niche group because the editor read my blog and decided that the topic of home staging would be valuable to their readers and I was the right person to provide that content.  Of course, I have to holes to fill on my website as well.  I have to be smart about the impending traffic that this column will drive to my site.  =)

Remember, you NEVER know who’s checking you out…what would they say when you ask “how do I look?”

Your Successful Staging Biz Assignment:

  1. Google your name and evaluate what the search results are and do you come up at all.
  2. Is your website projecting the right image and attracting the clientele you want?
  3. Do your social media profiles immediately tell people what you do? I can’t tell you how annoying it is when responding to friend requests and I can’t figure out why they want to be affiliated with me.  Also, make sure you don’t make your profile so private that even if you’re doing all the right things, the public wouldn’t ever find you because you’re making it impossible to be found.

Thanks for the reminder. It is something we should monitor on a regular basis. It can also alert you to people trying to use your business name.
